 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
The 1616 driver cannot do the "decoding" for the surround sound...

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
It is not a Surround Sound card, nor is it advertised as being one, sorry.
If you search this forum, you may find some references to how some people may have succeeded in a workaround, though. Escapes my memory as I wasn't in need of it, but I seem to recall something to that effect at one time.
Luck,

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
thanks...! ...but,what they mean with the Stereo 1/8" Speaker Outputs (configurable from stereo to 5.1) and this solution under their support, if it's imposible to have: Solution ID: 1847 How do I get surround sound To get 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 surround sound output using the 1212M, 1820/1820M, 1616/1616M, you must use software capable of creating a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 output mixing. It also has to have the capability of assigning each software surround output to a separate physical output for speakers. You must also have PatchMix set up so that each output from your surround mixing software has it's own ASIO output strip in PatchMix that also has a send assigned to the specific physical output of the E-MU product. I've tried with differend surround softwares like wizzo,SRS audio sandbox,... but none of them support asio of EMU 1616m and have no contol of these three 1/8" Speaker Outputs on the back of MIcrodock. Does anybody have the right software? Does anybody have an idea now?

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
I'm no surround sound guru by any means, but I think the answer lies right there:
"It also has to have the capability of assigning each software surround output to a separate physical output for speakers."
Don't know what software might be able to do that, hopefully someone will come along and post some clarification for this.

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
... yes, I've tried to select, create diferent physical outputs in PatchMix DSP Application, but the sound from rear, center & subwoofer didn't come out ! Only front speakers are working fine and subwoofer make some noises but not how it should be! Maybe is something about these physical outputs, but I have no idea

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
Surround Sound is encoded.
To get Dolby Digital surround sound in 5.1 channels on your PC, a Dolby Digital decoder is normally required.
The EMU card does not contain a surround sound decoder.
Certain softwares *might* contain one, and for those, routing the outputs to the separated speakers will work because the channels get decoded by the software first.
Google search the 5.1 surround format for starters.

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
Not sure how much this helps, but to quote the 1616m Manual: Page 20: Quote: The 1/8" stereo jacks make it easy to connect to powered surround sound speakers. Only three stereo cables are necessary with many speaker systems. The 18" jacks duplicate the 1/4" outputs.
You can connect the 1/8" stereo jacks to your surround speakers and connect the 1/4" outputs to your other gear for music creation. When you want to monitor in surround, simply open the 5.1 Session and turn on your surround speakers.
The chart below shows how to connect the outputs for 5.1 surround sound playback.
Multichannel WAVE to Surround Sound Speaker Channels (using factory 5.1 DVD playback session) __________________________________________________________________________________ WAVE Strip | Surround Channels | 1/4" Outputs | 1/8" Outputs ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E-DSP WAVE 1/2 | Front Left / Front Right | 1L=FL 1R=FR | 1 (Tip=FL Ring=FR) E-DSP WAVE 3/4 | Center / Subwoofer | 3L=C 3R=Sub | 3 (Tip=C Ring=Sub) E-DSP WAVE 5/6 | Rear Left / Rear Right | 2L=RL 2R=RR | 2 (Tip=RL Ring=RR)
Basically, just load the "5.1 DVD Playback" session, and plug the front speakers into output 1, rear speakers into output 2, and center/sub into output 3. You would need software that will decode though... The only thing I have had success with is nero showtime if I recall correctly.

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
good question...
i've gotten my 1616m working with a Creative Inspire P7800 in the past. My 2L/2R outputs died on me so I haven't been able to use it for awhile.

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
thank you for advice, ...
I have the same hook-up for my speakers using 1/8" Outputs! ...but this "5.1 DVD Playback" session is not listed in PatchMixDSP templates window, only "direct out" is possible for surround monitoring (and external mixing)! If I choose "direct out" template, the sound doesn't come out at all! (the channels aren't selected right)
Which strip I must load for 1 (Tip=FL Ring=FR),2 (Tip=RL Ring=RR),3 (Tip=C Ring=Sub) in PatchMixDSP mixer? ....Is there some plug-in or something that actually have a control over these 5.1 speakers? Is possible to control whole six speakers in PatchMixDSP...because only control now I have over WAVE L/R channel!
Have anybody succeed, using 1/8" Outputs? Did you raintheory have control over whole six speakers using 1/4" Outputs?

 Re: SURROUND SOUND 5.1 --- EMU 1616M
I think the problem is being able to route channels, so in a way after you created 3 stereo WAV strips and sent them to an auxilarly effect of an empty ASIO and WAV-Host (can't remember the proper name). Something like Cyberlink PowerDVD allows you select seperate speakers. However one potential problem is it may appear to be more than one sound-device and only route to the first stereo pair. I haven't been able to test this as yet.
