Post Virgin re-install needed for Vista->Win7 in-place upgrade?
I have a 1212M system running perfectly under Windows Vista.

I recently picked up a 3-back Win7 upgrade for my family's 3 PCs. I did my laptop last weekend using the In-Place upgrade option and, although slow as heck, it worked flawlessly and kept all settings, programs, drivers, etc. I'd love to be able to do this with my 1212M PC, but I'm wondering if I'll need to open up the PC and do a virgin re-install routine for the 1212M or will Win7 handle the existing 1212M without screwing up the driver files?

Has anyone attempted just the in-place upgrade? My understanding of the need for a virgin re-install is that Windows tries to install the Audigy/etc. driver files for the E-MU card, but this would be in the absence of existing drivers. What happens if the files already exist?

Thanks,
Steve.

Do NOT attempt an "in place" upgrade, but rather do a "clean" install with the DAW, including removal of the 1212M card. You are best off (99 times out of 100) to do a completely "fresh" install of the OS, including a re-formatting of the hard drive. Of course, backing-up the data in preparation for that can be a bear if you have it all on one drive with the OS... If you do attempt to do it, especially without removing the 1212M, you'll have to do the "Virgin Re-Install Routine" (as outlined in the site's FAQs Section) anyway in order to correct Windows' mis-identifying your 1212M as an Audigy sound card.

Thanks for the reply. In the end, I decided to go with a clean install of Win7 64-bit to another partition. I tried it without removing the 1212M and I have to say it worked flawlessly. I had no problems with Windows misidentifying the card at all. I simply installed Windows 7 then installed the E-MU 2.1 driver, rebooted, installed Patchmix 2.1, rebooted, and it's been working flawlessly ever since. I set the 1212M as my default device in Windows with 24/192 as the bit depth/sampling rate. I disabled internal windows sounds, but I like having the option to use the WDM driver for checking files from various media players, while still using the ASIO drivers for serious music work.

I even noticed that the E-MU driver works after the PC has gone into sleep mode and was then "awakened." I know this was a problem with earlier versions of Windows so perhaps it's been resolved in Windows 7.

Glad to hear things are working so well for you on the Win 7 x64 platform, Steve! :thumbsup

Hearing your positive report almost tempts me to "take the plunge", too, and treat my compie to a nice triple-boot configuration: everyday WinXP with all the usual "resource hogs"... ...WinXP 32-bit stripped to the bare bones for DAW use with my 1212m / 1616m, plus Win 7 x64 Home Premium as the new DAW platform to play around with... 8)

You'll have to post your full system specs then, stevethomson... lolol - Lots of folks will want to know about apparently trouble-free operation in Win7 with an EMU interface... That's especially heartening to hear that the Win7 install with the card inserted didn't trash your EMU driver install with a "... device not found ..." error message, as previous Windows versions do...

Indeed! I brought an 0404 USB home a few years ago and it wouldn't work on anything over 48kHz without spluttering like crazy. Fortunately, the store had a 2-week return policy so I brought it back and took home a 1212M, which has been working well ever since. I just wish I'd known it was a V1 (with Firewire) and not compatible with the Microdock.
